Seasonal Guide to Outdoor Cleaning & Maintenance: From Decking to Driveways
We know your outdoor space is your pride and joy in the warmer months. It is, in fact, an extension of your home. So, naturally, like every other part of your property, your decking, patio, and driveway can benefit greatly from regular upkeep.
And while year-round maintenance will definitely prove to the neighbours what an excellent homeowner you are, there's more to regular cleaning than meets the eye. It will extend the life of materials like wood, stone, and composite and protect your space from each season's unique challenges.
To help you do things right, we've compiled this guide so you can learn how to clean decking, driveways and patios and enjoy your dream pristine outdoor space all year round.
Spring: Rejuvenate & Prepare
There's no time like spring to breathe new life into our outdoor areas.
To prevent slips and surface damage, begin the cleaning process by sweeping and clearing away debris like dead leaves, dirt and moss from your driveway, patio and decking.
Decking
After the winter months of cold and damp weather, your wooden decking likely requires a deep clean.
To clean and restore the wooden surface, apply DC-50 Decking Cleaner, specifically designed for ultimate decking maintenance. Use a 10:1 ratio and agitate the product with a stiff brush. Then, leave it to work for 10-20 minutes. You can use a pressure washer set between 2-5% for stubborn stains, dirt, grime or traffic film. Rinse off the product completely to neutralise the surface.
Composite Decking
For composite decking, use CD-50 Composite Decking Cleaner at a 10:1 ratio and apply it with a brush, sprayer or snow foam lance to remove general grime built up over winter. Leave for 5-10 minutes, then re-agitate. Finally, rinse thoroughly to neutralise the surface.
For best results and to remove any algae, mould or mildew, pair CD-50 with CDA-50 Composite Decking Aftercare for lasting protection against green staining and environmental wear.
Patios & Driveways
For optimum patio and driveway maintenance in spring, use DR-50 Driveway & Patio Cleaner, your go-to solution for eliminating dirt and grime. Use at a ratio of 5:1 water to detergent, and apply with a stiff brush. Agitate and leave for up to 10 minutes before you rinse off thoroughly.
We recommend testing the product for compatibility on a small area of your patio or driveway. Additionally, if you notice excessive green algae buildup, use the product together with AM-100 Algae & Mould Remover.
Summer: Maintain & Protect
After a thorough cleaning in the Spring, you can make the most of your outdoor living space in the summer. Light maintenance during this period can go a long way and, in most cases, will be enough to keep your decking, patios, and driveways tidy and pristine.
Regular sweeping and a quick hose-down will help keep dirt, pollen and food debris from taking hold after long nights of entertaining.
Before hosting, use CD-50 to fast and effectively freshen up the decking areas so you can always keep the place ready for guests.
Pro Tip: Avoid overusing high-pressure washers on decking, especially on wooden surfaces. Stick to low-pressure settings and only deep clean once or twice a year to prevent surface damage.
Summer is also the prime time for special occasions, and if you're hosting one outdoors with a marquee, it’s worth giving everything a proper refresh. Our professional MQ-22 Marquee & Canvas Cleaner is the ideal choice for the job. It’s specially formulated to revive marquees and works brilliantly on awnings, too, just in time for their season in the sun.
Autumn: The Pre-Winter Prep
With the temperatures dropping and the leaves beginning to fall, the time has come to prepare your outdoor areas for the harsh months ahead. Make sure you continuously remove leaves and organic debris from all surfaces to prevent mould growth and clogged drainage.
Autumn is also the ideal time for a second deep clean. Use DC-50 to remove any lingering dirt or grime rinse thoroughly and inspect for signs of splintering, rot or damage that may worsen over winter.
If you have composite decking. Our Composite Decking Aftercare pack is the perfect solution which includes both the cleaner and anti - fungal treatment.
For driveways and patio maintenance, use DR-50 again to lift up any dirt, debris and grime . Prepare the joints by cleaning out any cracks or gaps, and apply polymeric sand or grout where needed to strengthen the surface.
Don’t forget to tend to outdoor furniture and structural elements: clean and dry them thoroughly, then cover or store them away as usual. Give hardware a quick check to ensure nothing’s rusting, loosening, or warping.
Winter: High-Minimum Effort
Winter maintenance is not intensive at all. A few smart steps will be enough to protect your outdoor spaces.
Simply make sure to always clear heavy snow promptly from decking, patios, and driveways with a soft broom or plastic shovel (this is to avoid surface damage).
For timber and composite decking, skip full cleans and focus instead on spot-cleaning any surface stains using a diluted solution of either DC-50 Decking Cleaner or the CD-50 Composite Decking Cleaner during milder spells. Avoid using pressure washers entirely during winter, as they can cause damage in freezing conditions.
Cold temperatures can also weaken materials, so it’s worth checking patio covers and fencing for signs of stress. If needed, give them a gentle clean with mild soap and water, and keep an eye out for snow or wind damage.
Finally, trim back nearby plants to reduce moisture accumulation and stop debris from building up.
With such small, strategic efforts, your outdoors will be protected all winter long, and you'll save time and costly repairs once spring returns.
