Caravan Cleaning Tips: Extending the Life of Your Caravan and Awning

HLS Supplies 10/11/2025

The sun is out, and outdoor adventures are calling your name. But it’s been some time since you last cleaned your caravan, hasn’t it? And now it seems you have to do it again before you venture into the open world together.

But let us stop you before you reach for the soap and car wash detergents. There’s a reason why their labels do not say caravan. It’s really important you use products specifically designed for caravan use. The paint and the bodywork are quite different, and car cleaning products can be very abrasive to the surface and damage your caravan’s paintwork.

And before you decide against giving it a proper clean, know that neglect can lead to a range of issues: mould and mildew build-up, UV damage, faded materials, and more. Yes, the appearance of your caravan will suffer, but these issues could all lead to costly repairs down the line as well.

So, to help you avoid such mishaps, we’ve compiled this guide to help you learn how to clean a caravan and awning the right way and extend their lifespan for more adventures on the road.

Caravan & Awning Care Done Right

Yes, the task ahead seems daunting, but remember that regular exterior cleaning will also protect your caravan's surface from long-term damage. Dirt, grime, traffic film, mould, etc., can all break down protective coatings and lead to deterioration over time.

Essential Tools & Products to Use

Non-abrasive, caravan-specific cleaning products like CC-75 Caravan Cleaner are your best friend. Such solutions are safe to use on caravan surfaces of all kinds, including metal, fibreglass, vinyl, and paint.

Soft brushes, microfibre cloths, an extendable handle for hard-to-reach areas, and a gentle hose (never use jet washes, as these can break the seals of some parts of your caravan) are ideal for brushing and agitating the solutions.

How to Clean Your Caravan: Step-by-Step

Start by diluting 1 part of the CC-75 Caravan Cleaner with up to 50 parts of warm or cold water. If the vehicle requires a more thorough cleaning, we recommend adjusting the ratio to approximately 1:25.

Apply the product by spray, with a soft brush, or simply wipe it onto the affected areas. Leave it to work for 10 minutes, brush again, and rinse thoroughly with a gentle hose.

For best results, work from the top down, as the roof is more likely to have collected the majority of dirt, grime, and mould. Use a stepladder, if you have one, and a hose with a gentle setting to loosen some of the dirt before applying the product.

From then on, work your way around each section of the caravan.

Finally, for optimum caravan care, avoid drying your caravan in the sun, as this can cause watermarks and may damage the vehicle’s surface. Use a microfibre cloth to thoroughly dry without leaving behind any streaks.

How to Clean Your Awning Properly

Your caravan awning can collect all kinds of dirt throughout the seasons. To make sure it will last you for years, it’s best to clean it as soon as you notice dirt buildup to avoid deep staining that can damage the fabric.

Start by using AT-55 Awning and Tent Cleaner, perfect for family tents and caravan awnings of synthetic and cotton fabrics alike. Mix 1 part of the product with up to 50 parts of water for a gentle clean. Apply with a soft brush, spray or sponge and leave the product to work for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off.

If your awning has tough mould or algae stains that persist after the treatments, we recommend you follow up with AM-100 Algae & Mould Remover, specifically formulated to eliminate the stubborn stains.

Finally, to really go the extra mile to help you enjoy your awning season after season, it’s best to apply the FS-75 Fabric Sealer at the end of your cleaning routine to provide an additional layer of protection against the elements. The sealer is designed to extend the life of your awnings and maintain the quality of the fabric over time.

If you’re cleaning an awning before storing it, always let it dry completely before packing it away. Even the slightest dampness can lead to nasty odours, fabric degradation and mildew growth. If the weather allows, pitch the awning on a dry, sunny day to air it out after cleaning.

Don’t Forget the Windows

Caravan windows are often made from acrylic and polycarbonate, so they need gentle care to avoid scratching and damage.

We suggest you avoid using ammonia-based cleaners and instead use plastic-safe window cleaners or mild, soapy water with a soft microfibre cloth.

Start by rinsing off loose dirt before adding the solution or soapy water, and wipe in straight motions (never in circles!). Always aim to clean in the shade to prevent streaks.

While you clean your caravan windows, take the time to inspect the rubber seals for cracks or signs of wear. Clean them gently, and if for extended life, treat them occasionally with a rubber protectant to help them maintain their flexibility and prevent leaks.

How Often Should You Clean a Caravan?

A general rule of thumb is to give your vehicle a full clean every 1-2 months during periods of regular use. Always clean thoroughly before and after each long trip and seasonal storage. This will ensure optimum protection and maintenance all year round, keeping mould and stains at bay.

Protective Measures for Long-Term Care

Armed with some additional awning and caravan cleaning tips, you can sleep soundly before any trip, knowing your vehicle is in top-notch condition.

To further maintain your caravan’s exterior, use sealants and regular waxing to protect it against UV rays and weathering, especially if you store it outdoors. Check seals, joints, and the roof as often as possible for cracks or any other signs of damage. And don’t forget the underbody! Clean and treat to prevent rust and keep tyres covered when parked to avoid UV damage.

When it comes to awnings, you can apply our FS-75 Fabric Sealer to create a water-resistant barrier and prolong the fabric’s life. When storing the awning, fold it loosely to avoid mould growing, and avoid stretching and dragging when you set it up. Take it down to avoid wear and tear.

A Little Maintenance for a Lot More Adventures

Regular upkeep will make cleaning your caravan and awning far less daunting and far more rewarding. A little care goes a long way. With just a few protective measures, the right cleaning products, and smart storage habits, you can keep everything in pristine condition for many adventures to come.
