BAC50 is a cationic surfactant containing 50% active quaternary ammonium compound benzalkonium chloride which is used as a biocide, fungicide, algaecide, and surfactant and exhibits broad spectrum activity against a range of gram positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as enveloped viruses such as Hepatitis B and HIV.
BAC50 is suitable for the formulation of disinfectants, cleansers and sterilant and as a fungicidal/algicidal wash base for the maintenance or pre-decoration treatment of masonry, brick, timber, plaster, paintwork etc.
It can be used as an algicide, slimicide in swimming pools, industrial water reservoirs and cooling towers and for the preparation of wood preserving formulations intended for primary treatment and secondary preservation.
Benzalkonium chloride (BAC50) is a quaternary ammonium-based antiseptic and disinfectant. It is a bactericidal and fungicidal agent that helps to reduce the growth of organisms in multidose containers, and it is similar to other cationic surfactants.

Benzalkonium chloride is readily soluble in ethanol, IPA, and acetone. Although dissolution in water is slow, aqueous solutions are easier to handle and are preferred. Solutions should be neutral to slightly alkaline, with colour ranging from colourless to a pale yellow. Solutions should foam when shaken.

BAC50 is a rapid acting biocide for protection against algae, yeast, bacterial and fungal growth in the wet state. It displays high degree of biodegradability.
Applications.
It is a biocide, miscible in water and of low toxicity. It can be used to control the growth of microorganisms in emulsion paints, adhesives concrete additives and other water treatment formulations. Active ingredient in a variety of disinfectants.
